José Antonio Escobar

José Antonio Escobar, geboren 1973 in Santiago de Chile, gehört zu den interessantesten Musikerpersönlichkeiten einer neuen Gitarrengeneration. Er besticht durch eine perfekte Balance zwischen intensiver musikalischer Ausdruckskraft und immensen Wissen der verschiedenen Musikstile und Epochen.

 

Nachdem er seine Studien mit “Summa cum laude“ beendet hatte, erhielt er ein Stipendium der chilenischen Regierung um sein Studium an der Hochschule für Musik in Augsburg in der Meisterklasse bei Grammy-Gewinner Prof. Franz Halàsz weiter zuführen.

 

Wegen seines großen Interesses für historische Zupfinstrumente rundete er seine Ausbildung in Meisterkursen bei den Lautenisten Hopkinson Smith und Eduardo Egüez ab. Gleichwohl spielt die Interpretation der zeitgenössischen Gitarrenmusik eine bedeutende Rolle für den Gitarristen. So gab er insbesondere bei chilenischen Komponisten Werke in Auftrag, führte diese erstmals auf und spielte sie ein. Zudem bemüht sich José Antonio um die südamerikanische Folklore. Namhafte Komponisten, wie Angelo Gilardino, Clarice Assad, Javier Farías, Christian Vásquez und Javier Contreras, widmeten Escobar ihre Werke.

 

José Antonio Escobar erspielte sich über 15 Preise und Auszeichnungen bei den bedeutendsten Gitarrenwettbewerben wie dem "Francisco Tárrega"-Wettbewerb (Spanien), dem "Heitor Villa-Lobos"-Wettbewerb (Rio de Janeiro), dem „Julian Arcas“- Wettbewerb (Almería), sowie bei der Stotsenberg International Guitar Competition in Malibu, California (USA).

 

Als Solist und Kammermusik bereiste er über 30 Länder in Europa, Nord- und Südamerika, Asien, Ozeanien und Nordafrika. Er spielte als Solist mit zahlreichen Orchestern u.a. mit dem Orquestra Filarmonica di Torino, Extremadura Orchester, St. Michel Strings (Mikkeli, Finland), The Israel Camerata (Jerusalem), The State Academic Symphony Orchestra "Evgeny Svetlanov" und debütierte in großen Konzertsälen, unter anderem im Brahms Saal (Wiener Musikverein), Purcell Room at the Queen Elizabeth Hall und St. John’s Smith Square in London,  Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, Tschaikowsky-Saal in Moskau, Cecilia Meireles Saal in Rio de Janeiro,  Monumental Saal in Madrid, Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas und dem Cairo Opera House.

 

Zahlreiche Einspielungen bei den Labels von NAXOS und RTVE (Spanischer Rundfunk) fanden hohe Beachtung in der Fachpresse. Weiterhin nahm er einen Life-Auftritt von Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez für La 2 Programm von Spanien TVE auf, was danach weltweit übertragen wurde.

 

Seine pädagogische Karriere begann José Antonio Escobar im Alter von 25 Jahren (1998) als Dozent an der Universidad de Chile. Er arbeitete als Assistent für Franz Halàsz sowie in Form eines „Lehrauftrags Für Gitarre“ an der Hochschule für Musik in Nürnberg - Augsburg (2000-2003). Er unterrichtete Gitarre und Kammermusik als leitender Professor an der Hochschule für Musik an der Universidad Austral de Chile (2003-2004). Seit 2004 bis 2012 er war Professor am Musikhochschule der Universidad Mayor de Santiago in Chile. Zusätzlich gab Herr Escobar Meisterkurse in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Spanien, Italien, Dänemark, Finnland, Norwegen, USA, Brasilien, Argentinien und Kolumbien,

 

Derzeit lebt José Antonio Escobar in Barcelona.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading guitar ensembles, the duo’s chameleon-like ability to communicate in a multitude of musical styles makes them a constantly evolving entity with a unique creative voice.

Likened to a ‘miraculous single guitarist blessed with an impossibly wonderful technique and an exceptionally delicate touch’ (The Observer) the Eden Stell Guitar Duo have been invited to perform at venues and music festivals around the world; including Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Turkey, USA, Canada, Mexico, South and Central America and Australia, plus numerous radio and TV appearances on ITV, BBC and European and North American networks.

Mark Eden and Christopher Stell graduated from the Royal Academy of Music as recipients of the Principal’s Prize and the Julian Bream Prize, and continued their studies in Brussels with the Brazilian Guitar Duo, Sérgio and Odair Assad with the aid of a grant from the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

Soon after, the Duo were selected to perform for the Park Lane Group’s Young Artists’ Concert Series and won the South East Musicians’ Platform competition, giving them debut concerts at London’s Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre where they have since become regular artists, performing at both venues for music organisations such as ‘Live Music Now!’, the Kirckman Concert Society, Classical Guitar Magazine, and the International Guitar Foundation (IGF).

Mark and Chris’ concerto engagements have featured performances with the Prague Chamber Orchestra and International Philharmonic at some of Europe’s largest venues including the Beethovenhalle and Stuttgart Liederhalle, with recent international recitals for prestigious events such as Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), Omni Foundation Concert Series in San Francisco, Wigmore Hall London, London Guitar Festival at Kings Place, The Sage Gateshead, Alla Grande Festival and Hamilton Guitar Festival (Canada), and Uppsala Kongress Hall (Sweden), 92nd Street Y New York, New Mexico Guitar Festival, Gevelsberg Guitar Festival and Iserlohn Guitar Festival (Germany), as well as others.

The duo were the first guitarists since Julian Bream to be Editor’s Choice in Gramophone magazine with their ‘land mark recording’ of works by Stephen Dodgson. They have recorded 7 CDs to date on BGS, but also with Hannsler Classics, and Naxos, and are dedicatees of new works by acclaimed composers Stephen Dodgson, Adam Gorb, Dusan Bogdanovic, Gary Ryan, and Johannes Moller.

Mark and Chris were elected Associates of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of their outstanding musical achievements and they both currently hold teaching positions at the Royal College of Music, and Birmingham Conservatoire. The Duo are D’Addario strings endorsed artists.
