József Eötvös

Hungary's leading guitarist József Eötvös was born in 1962 in Pecs. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar with Roland Zimmer, where he also studied composition by Franz Just. He graduated in 1987. He played concerts in many countries, among them Austria, Bohemia, Germany, Greece, Japan, Lithuania, Romania, Netherlands, Sweden, Singapore and Slovakia, and regularly gives master classes in Europe and abroad.

He established the guitar department at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he currently teaches. He is the artistic director of the well known Esztergom International Guitar Festival and the Balaton International Guitar Festival, and very actively engaged in the promotion of the guitar in Hungary.

His solo transcription of the Bach Goldberg Variations (Chanterelle) and has been hailed by guitar savants as the guitar transcription of the century. Following the success of this transcription Eötvös has published all Bach's lute works for solo guitar (Chanterelle), Chopin's piano works (Professional Music Press - Poland and Gendai Guitar - Japan) and Brahms' Hungarian Dances (MelBay). Eötvös also composes for the guitar and other instruments; his compositions include the Willow Variations, (Editions Orphée, Columbus Ohio 1991) Five Aphorisms (Trekel Verlag, Hamburg 1997) and Featherflakes. In year 2002 he received in Hungary the "Artisjus Award" - for the interpretation of hungarian contemporary music, and in year 2004 the "Franz Liszt Award", the highest award for musicians in Hungary.
